In 1860 the last slave ship illegally carrying nearly 100 enslaved Africans landed on the shores of the Mobile River. The Clotilda was owned by the Meaher Family of Mobile who to this date remains one of the most influential and wealthy families in Southern Alabama. The descendants of the enslaved people who founded Africatown are now faced with a community that has been decimated by environmental racism. With the recent discovery of the wreckage of the ship in 2019 by environmentalist and journalist Ben Raines, the question remains whether or not the descendants of those enslaved Africans should be compensated.
